About Modern Roofing

The company was established in 2007 by Gordon Speirs, following years of practical roofing experience gained as a sole trader, often working alongside his brother Andrew for some of the leading roofing contractors of the time. Since then, Modern Roofing has developed from a small flat-roofing contractor into an experienced business capable of managing larger and more complex projects for factories, warehouses, commercial premises, public-sector buildings and industrial facilities.

Our early experience in single-ply membranes remains an important part of the business, but our work now covers a wider range of modern roofing systems. This includes Sika single-ply membranes, liquid-applied waterproofing, metal roof sheeting, roof overcladding, gutter refurbishment, safety-line systems, electronic roof integrity testing and planned roof maintenance.

Much of our work is carried out on occupied and operational buildings. That means every project has to be planned around access, health and safety, programme, weather protection and business continuity. Our aim is to solve the roofing problem while keeping disruption to the client’s day-to-day operation as low as reasonably possible.

Modern Roofing takes a practical, survey-led approach. We assess the existing roof, identify the cause and extent of any defects, and compare repair, refurbishment, overcladding or replacement options before recommending the most suitable route. This helps clients make informed decisions based on the actual condition of the roof rather than being pushed automatically towards full replacement.

As the company grew, Modern Roofing invested in its own office and yard premises, giving the business a permanent base for planning projects, storing materials and equipment, and supporting a growing team that includes contracts management, estimating, site supervision and experienced roofing operatives. The move reflected the development of the company from a small contractor into a more established operation with both office-based and site-based staff.

Modern Roofing is committed to carrying out its roofing work with its own established labour force. We believe clients are better served by trained roofing operatives who know our systems, understand our standards and are accountable to the company, rather than relying heavily on unknown subcontract labour with varying levels of experience.

This approach gives us greater control over workmanship, site conduct, health and safety, programme and the quality of the finished roof. Where a specialist subcontractor is genuinely required, they are selected for a specific technical role and work as part of a properly managed package rather than replacing the core roofing team.

We continue to invest in training, modern waterproofing technology, testing equipment and relationships with established roofing-system manufacturers. This allows us to combine traditional roofing judgement with current materials, safer working methods and more accurate roof investigation.
